Dreams don’t work unless you do
Dreams don’t work unless you do
The young talented Canadian goalkeeper Daniil Antonov trains and works every day to fulfill his dream of joining Canada national team and a professional contract in a European club.
Daniil participated for the first time in a tournament with the NF Academy during the Ibercup in Cascais. For the 2007 goalkeeper, it was both a good experience and a challenge.
I enjoyed the week in Cascais. I played a year up with the 2006 team, and it was a great challenge for me. The teams we played against were some of the top teams in Portugal, for example, Estoril Praia. It was challenging but a good experience. I also found the team meetings about training sessions and our games very helpful every day. I liked the hotel we stayed at; the food was good, and the NF staff were very organized and helpful, says Daniil.
Ibercup Cascais provided international experience for the goalkeeper who has Aaron Ramsdayle and Iker Casillas as two of his role models.
I have many role models when it comes to goalkeepers and players. My football dreams are big. But I really like the quote; I don’t know who said it, “Dreams don’t work unless you do”. So, I am training to make the national team one day and play in a European club, says the canadian goalkeeper.

Sense of Europe and details
Daniil Antonov works purposefully to achieve his goals, and has seen the difference between everyday training at home in Canada and the training of goalkeepers in Portugal.
“In Canada, I usually have 3 team training sessions and one game. But I also do around 3 goalkeeper training with the goalkeeper coach. Plus, one training session focuses on footwork. The training in Canada for goalkeepers is different from the training in Portugal. In Canada, we would work on all sorts of diving and footwork and coordination, yet in Portugal, they would focus on tiny details that can change a goalkeeper’s position in the goal before a shot or going for a cross.” tells Daniil.
Based on the details and the sense of the Portuguese model, Antonov ended up in Cascais. As specially invited by NF Academy.
Daniil started playing football in Canada under couches from Italy and France. So Daniil always wanted to experience and learn the European way of football in Europe because the level of training is very high. Daniil likes challenges, learning and new experiences and NF camp in February/March looked like a fantastic opportunity to help him develop as a person and a player. After the Camp, Daniil was invited to play the Ibercup with NF Academy, says mother Oxana Antonova.
The son had a good sporting benefit from playing the Ibercup in Cascais.
I learned a lot during my training and the Ibercup. Especially with the goalkeeper coach Stefan Olimpio from Sporting CP. He focused on the tiny details that I had never thought of doing. I am also very thankful to my team coach Ricardo Silva for all his support and guidance. I still remember his speech in the changing room before our game against Sporting during the camp.
I learned new ideas on starting attacks as a goalkeeper and communicating with the team and the concepts of attacking the ball on corner kicks and the important goalkeeper positions, tels Daniil.
Beautiful Cascais
Participating in NF Academy’s program also gave the rest of the family the opportunity to have an unforgettable holiday. In beautiful Cascais there are always opportunities.
“All our family had a pleasant stay. Not only the NF Academy took care of the players, but they also helped the parents with travel and made their experience easier and enjoyable.” says mother Oxana Antonova.
At the same time the players made new friends from other countries. In addition to understanding that the goalkeeper’s role is more than defending his own goal.
I have never worked with Portuguese coaches before coming to NF Academy and I have found it especially interesting how they see the game. From how goalkeepers can be involved in attacks and the slightest details in the goal. I also uncovered the important elements of making goal-creating chances and using the ball in your favour that can weaken your opponent. NF creates a unique atmosphere for learning and making new friends and connections.
For example, going on walks with the team and staying in a hotel room with my teammates helped me make new friends from different countries. And even now, we still talk to each other, says Daniil.
When will we see Daniil back at NF Academy?
Daniil has enjoyed the NF Academy programs and thinks he can learn more. Daniil was invited to join the NF High Performance elite training in July, tells mother Oxana Antonova in the end.
