Memorable learning experiences for the youngest players

NF Academy has a program for almost anyone. Even the youngest players. Through our programs the eager and motivated footballer can get a chance to practice more and to gather valuable football experiences. Most likely he or she can gather a life lesson along the way as well.

Already in February, young boys and girls can travel to Portugal to experience some of what Sporting Lisbon has to offer.

Michael (11) participated at several events in 2022, and can now look back at helpful learning experiences and memories for life.

It has been real fun, says Michael Tønsager Strømme, an 11-year-old boy from Oslo in Norway.

Despite his young age, “Mike” has known NF Academy for quite some time; he’s taken part in a couple of Training Camps and two tournaments, that being Future Cup in Goteborg in April and Spar Nordic Esbjerg Cup in May.

Especially, the tournaments became lasting memories and the summits of the year for the young Norwegian.

I had a blast. It was a bit more exciting than “just” playing here in Oslo. To play with people that I didn’t know beforehand – some also spoke another language – as well as being coached by coaches from another country was very fun.

I had to come a little bit out of my shell and be more forthcoming than I usually am, but that went very well, and I ended up making a lot of new friends, says Michael.

I have to say: It’s always fun to play football, but it’s a little bit extra fun when you travel to another country to play. Especially when you travel together like we did, feeling like a real team, he quickly adds.

A new level

Usually, Michael plays at a club called Ullern. There he plays at the boys under 12 team, and sometimes with the one-year older boys. Most of his week is dedicated to football. At his club, Michael has a lot of training sessions at a good level with good, professional coaches, and the players he’s playing with – and against – in practice are at a high level.

Even though, the eager, young lad felt that the trips with NF gave him valuable lessons and experiences that have helped him on his path as a footballer.

The opponents we faced were though. Very though. Actually, we lost several games, all though we fielded really good team. They were better than us both individually and as a unit, and I learned a lot just playing opponents like that, says Michael convincingly.

New friends – on and off the pitch

Young boys and girls who takes part in camps and tournaments arranged by or together with NF Academy, does not only get to meet new players from other parts of their country, but also players from different nations.

Michael, as an example, suddenly had new teammates from both Sweden and Finland during this summer’s tournaments with NF.

I found that really amazing. As I said, you have to work a little bit harder to get to know them, and the same counts for what happens on the field. You have to quickly learn what they can- and like to do, so we can better cooperate during the game, Michael explains, and further adds, and that worked out very well!

Michael’s father, Christian, also highlights this part of the learning experience which can be had with such and similar NF activities.

I noticed that it was a bit new, and a bit different, for Michael to play alongside boys he didn’t know as footballers. He had to adapt quickly.

From what I could see, he learned a lot of from it. Even more importantly, he grew a lot as a person by having to turn strangers to friends, and to get to know them so well that cooperation as a team didn’t become a problem, Christian says.

Helped us to play at our potential

Activities organized by NF includes coaches from Portugal, leading both the training sessions and the games. With them, they bring a methodology which now have brought forth many top international footballers over the past decades.

The Portuguese has become one of the most potent football talent developing nations, and now young players from other countries than Portugal can experience some of the reason behind this: Their training methods and their pedagogical approach to lead both sessions and games alike.

The coaches were very skilled. They made us our best and helped us reach our potential in games. I also got a lot of advice which I learned much from, praises Michael.

Are you going to participate in any NF activities in 2023?

I sure hope so! And I’d recommend anyone who wants to try it out, to do so. You learn a lot and you make new friends, he answers.

Pleased football-parent

Dad, Christian, has been following his sons footballing journey throughout whole his upbringing. There isn’t any doubt in his mind that partaking in different NF Academy activities and programs has been influencing Michael positively. In a myriad of ways.

In the tournaments in both Sweden and Denmark, stepping out of his comfort zone both on and off the pitch was a rich learning experience for him. To travel and to be a lot more independent than what is customary in his daily life, made him grow a lot in a short amount of time, and I think this is healthy for a lot of young kids.

Football-wise, I think it was valuable to play against very good footballers. The level was a lot, lot higher than he is used to. Additionally, I also reckon that playing a “real” tournament with group stages, tables and knock-out rounds made for a great learning experience.

Regarding the level, he may have struggled in the start of the tournaments. It didn’t take long, though, before he got accustomed to the higher tempo and got visibly better said Christian.

So, what is the most important thing Michael is left with after all this?

First and foremost, the development he got as a person. Being independent, dealing with a whole new social situation, and that sort of things. All in all, I’d say the experiences as a whole was important for him.

I know he’s keen on joining similar events and tournaments again, Christian says, and smiles.

What about parents that have equally motivated kids like Michael: Do you have any advice for them?

Yes, and that, there, is the point; it is the kid that has to have the motivation to participate – not the parent. This was all Michael’s idea and wish.

If your son our daughter wants this, I’d recommend trying. No matter how it goes, it’s a great experience.

Play against Sporting in February

With a new year fast approaching, one can be pleased that there is a lot to look forward to when it comes activities from NF Academy. One of them is NF Elite Training Camp Winter in Portugal during week 8.

This camp is for youth players born from 2012 and up to 2006. The players will travel down to Estoril in Portugal and there be coached by coaches for Sporting Lisbon and play against top Portuguese players their own age.

They will experience top level training sessions with a lot of good players and play challenging games.

The training sessions unfold at the academy of Sporting Lisbon, and the games are against heir youth teams. The participants will be coached by experienced and highly skilled Portuguese coaches, in the same way that helped Cristiano Ronaldo, João Felíx and Bernardo Silva reach the top.

This way, motivated players can get an exceptional football program and some extraordinary memories along the way. Adding to that, players that show a high level might even get an invitation to train with Sporting Lisbon at a later occasion.

Lastly, participation in the Training Camp Winter increases the chances to get picked for the NF team Elite Selection, who partakes in elite tournaments, competing against some of the best clubs in Europe.
